CELESTIAL BIRDHOUSES

This project is currently in development.

I intend to create a series of 6 interactive, space-themed birdhouse sculptures. These birdhouses will represent a classic 1950’s style interpretation of the idea of space adventure. My birdhouse designs include: a UFO, a Rocket Ship, a Robot, an Astronaut, the planet Saturn, and a Comet.

Each one will mount to a custom designed 15 – 20 foot steel pole that mounts into a steel plate and securely bolts to a concrete pad. The birdhouses will lock onto a support arm with a bronze sun, moon, or star. The pole structure will be topped by a kinetic wind-powered mechanism in the form of a matching sun, moon, or star.

I plan to collaborate with the Audubon Society to ensure that the birdhouses will be fully functional. Each one will have a trapdoor and combination lock so that they can be easily cleaned out in the winter and prepped for a new family of birds for the following season.

I will also incorporate solar panels into each birdhouse that will charge a battery on sunny days. At night a photosensitive electronic eye will turn on LED lights in each piece.

The pole structures, wind-powered mechanisms, and birdhouses will be created from steel, bronze, and outdoor quality cast plastic resins and will be decorated in bright colors using durable weather-proof enamels and metal patinas.
